an upstate escape

12:14:00 PM

I recently took a little trip upstate to Saugerties, New York where I rented a tiny hut with my guy in Palenville.

I know myself well and I know when I need fresh air, open spaces, and greenery everywhere.  Essentially, I know when I need to live out the Dixie Chick's Wide Open Spaces lyrics. I absolutely adore my life here in Manhattan, but I needed a little break from the smog and city bustle. So onwards and upwards to Saugerties we go!

We found our little hut through GlampingHub. You can rent this exact one here. The space was completed with every detail that we didn't need but we loved. Citronella candles littered the floor, an old-school pencil sharpener was fastened against the wall and little knick knacks and books from previous guests were stacked on the out-of-tune piano.

We moved in to the space on Friday night and spent the first three hours fighting off the mosquitos that had clearly rented out the space in between guests. The sleeping bags were laid out and the peppers were sizzling on the cooking pan. The two of us nodded our heads in unison, acknowledging this was our weekend-home, and made interior adjustments to make it feel as such. By 9:00pm, one could see a warm glow from our cabin within the dark, soaking forest.

We didn't need to bring much. We were content with a pair of hiking boots, a couple of t-shirts and shorts, the ever trustworthy JetBoil and some homemade muffins. We ate grilled veggies and pita for dinner and enjoyed fresh fruit and scrambled eggs with our coffee in the morning.

We had set out on our three-day adventure with the minimal intention to enjoy the surrounding nature, move our legs through the mountains and enjoy cooking and conversation in a sweet, isolated hut.

We adventured through the tall pines surrounding magnificent Kaaterskill Falls. We explored the tiny town of Palenville and enjoyed a pint of Ripa Dipa at Rip Van Winkle's Brewery. We tried to brave the cold and swim in the Big Deep swimming hole in Woodstock. We even walked to the darling Saugerties Lighthouse and swooned over the local bookstore-meets-coffee-shop gem.

It was the perfect escape from the busy city and it was the first time that I had returned back the city and thought to my self "I'm home".  It's lovely just what a little self-centering and a return to nature can do.
